  • ILA US East Coast Port Strike. Some 36 major ports on the US east and Gulf coasts have now shuttered, despite a last-minute near-50% wage increase offer from employers’ association USMX. In a statement, the USMX said: "In the last 24 hours, the USMX and ILA have traded counteroffers related to wages. The USMX increased our offer and has also requested an extension of the current master contract, now that both sides have moved off their previous positions." Shipping lines are beginning to declare force majeure as the strike enters its second day. Any hope that the government might intervene to halt the economically damaging strike was dashed, as the White House sided with the union. The administration also warned carriers against ‘price-gouging’ as the strike continues. President Biden urged both sides to restart collective bargaining, stating, "the best way for workers to get the pay and benefits they deserve."

  • China wins 80% of all containership orders in 2024. Chinese shipyards have dominated the surge in orders for containerships this year, now holding 61% of the total orderbook for boxships. Competitive pricing, early delivery slots, and a stable workforce give Chinese yards an edge over South Korean competitors when negotiating newbuilding contracts.

  • K Line partners with Kamigumi to boost logistics operations. K Line has allied with Japanese logistics provider Kamigumi to form a joint venture, integrating their logistics businesses.
